Bolton Wanderers FC were founded as Christ Church FC, by students and teachers of Christ Church Sunday school. In those days, players were fined two pence for swearing and sixpence for failing to turn up to a match once they had been chosen to play. The club were in the vanguard of the campaign to legalise professionalism and were founder members of the league. The Trotters were a formidable team on the pitch as well as off it. They reached their first FA Cup final in 1894 and were a regular First division side. The club was at its zenith during the 1920’s when they won the FA Cup on three occasions without conceding a goal in any of the finals. Five football players scored a hat trick of FA Cup winner’s medals. Pym, Seddon, Haworth, Butler and Nuttall. However, despite the club’s fine cup form, they were unable to improve on third position in the top flight which to this day, still remains their highest league position. In 1946, Burnden Park witnessed English football’s worst tragedy until then. Thirty three supporters died and 400 were injured when crash barriers gave way during an FA Cup match against Stoke City. The disaster led to safety improvements being made on grounds throughout the nation.
